Battlefield of the Mind

Hi guys! It’s still raining here in Manila, and I’ve read that some areas in Mindanao are flooded? I hope everything is fine down there.

Today, I want to share the book “Battlefield of the Mind” written by Joyce Meyer.

Joyce Meyer is a Christian author and speaker. And her book which I am going to introduce to you right now, I reckon, is worth reading than the Secret. :)

The book talks about how the mind can be the setting of all problems. Things begin with negative thoughts until these things become actions. Pretty similar to the secret? No. This is a Christian way of seeing things.

It tells you that the mind is important and that you have to know its conditions and be able to identify different mentalities you want to avoid. Unlike the Secret, which shares the power of your thoughts and that if you think it, it will happen, Battlefield shares that things will happen according to what God has planned and it is very important that you follow his decisions instead of yours. Think the way He thinks.

I haven’t finished reading the book yet, but the thirteen chapters were already enough for me to suggest this to you and that it’s worth reading. Don’t mind the preachy style of writing. I guess she brought that profession to the table. ‘Sif it matters anyway. I love that this book was able to speak to me in a lot of life aspects.

I think one of the things that was really remarkable in this one is it implanted in me the verse Mark 11:24, which says: “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Isn’t this encouraging?

The book also says that if ever what we have asked for was not “given”, do not fret, because in God’s plan, things will be better. It says that man’s decisions have always failed, which I believe is true because man isn’t perfect at all. That’s why it’s very important that we trust God in everything because his plans will always lead us to success.

But the book does not talk about this alone. There are chapters dedicated to combating worry, depression, judgment, wondering, confusion, doubting, and many other activities of the mind that can leave the person under total hopelessness.

This book suggests solutions to that and more, and it makes you more interested to read and study the Bible.

The next book I’m about to read is “10 Myths About Introverts”.

Here’s a bit of a summary:

100th post on the 30th! See you.

Book Purchases at Crown

February 1st, 2011 § 2 Comments

Hello! It’s the start of February. :)

History project. I had to get a copy of Lualhati Bautista’s Dekada ’70 for a book review. I didn’t feel like borrowing it at the library just because I could not commit to reading it before its date of return. And so I opted to buy the book, but Bibliarch and the National Bookstore ran out. What am I to do?

Since I was in my hometown for the weekend, I went to an old favorite bookstore, Crown.  That place reminded me of childhood. The floor, the set up, the stairs… they were still the same. And boy did the place smell the same also! (Sans the clogged nose!)

Same old, same old...

It was a sweet reunion. I went upstairs to go to their books area. Surprisingly, I also found the books that I wanted to buy for so long but I hadn’t had the chance to because the usual bookstores always ran out!

I couldn’t help it. I bought them. ALL.

(BTW, meet my nephew, Jacob who gamely posed with the books I purchased at Crown.)

This is the book by Lualhati Bautista, Dekada ’70. Written in Filipino, the novel details the story of a middle class family that struggled and faced changes during the Marcos regime. It’s a good addition to anyone’s book collection.

I have always wanted to read The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. I’ve read over a dozen of quotes from the book and I found them to be very enlightening. My best friends tell me it’s a good read as well, and so I thought it’s something worth keeping (and collecting). I shall commit 40 days of my life to reading the book soon, and I shall share my insights to you on my future posts. (Actually, I’ll be starting today. I’ll be reading the first chapter while travelling to school. Shall be good. I’ll share what I have learned/ reflected on tomorrow. After all, “growth is never an isolated, individualistic pursuit. Maturity is produced through relationships and community.” – TPDL)

When I was in Manila for the holidays, I stumbled upon Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer in Power Books. I read a couple of chapters, and I found the content interesting. “Worry, doubt, confusion, depression, anger, and feelings of condemnation… all these are attacks on the mind. She (Joyce Meyer) teaches you how to deal with thousands of thoughts you have every day and focus your mind to think the way God thinks.”

Jacob's pose after hearing the title of the book. Nobody taught him that. Hahaha!

Oooh! And these books were all placed inside the same design of plastic as before. I wish they shifted to using brown bags, though. :)

Oh and just recently, Sandi uploaded a video of the announcement of winners in the 8th Foreign Languages Song Festival. Here’s the video:
Crown Bookstore is located in Roxas Avenue, General Santos City.

Jacob cried when I took the books from him. Those aren't toys. :)

Where Am I?
